Maybe not everyone is excited about the new 5G technology that is coming soon to the communication space. However, one thing is for sure; it would affect you whether you want it to or not. So, I decided to write this article about 5G, to give you a hint of how 5G technology is likely to affect the lives of everyone.
What exactly is 5G?
5G is the fifth generation of wireless connectivity. This is a new broadband transmission protocol that uses a radio signal to transmit information at extremely high frequency (EHF). This technology allows 5G to enable connections that are significantly better than anything 4G has to offer.
The 5G technology would allow devices to transmit high volumes of data between mobile and the internet of things (IoT) devices at very fast speeds. The current 4G (LTE) network boasts a speed of about 100 megabits per second, 5G, on the other hand, boasts of a speed of up to 10 gigabits per second. That’s incredible.
It is expected that with 5G technology, the delay in network response would reduce from 50 milliseconds to 1 millisecond; that is almost instantaneous!
One of the most important features that a lot of technology enthusiasts are counting on is that millions of devices will be able to connect simultaneously with no reduction in connection bandwidth. This is a feature that will allow advancements in IoT.
What exactly does this mean to the common man?
Well, for starters, you get to download an HD movie in just about 10 seconds.
-Internet of things
To more revolutionizing things then. With the apparent improvements in transmission speed and connection stability, 5G can be the missing piece to put us in a world where everything is truly connected. It might just be the kind of connection we need to make a fully functional Internet of things (IoT) that everyone can make use of.
Smart cities would no longer be a thing of science fiction or the dreams of fanatic engineers; you can now have a network that you can rely on to make sure all of your devices are connected simultaneously.
-Virtual Reality
Ever since virtual reality hit the technology scene a few years ago, there has been slow but steady growth in that area. However, with the introduction of Nvidia’s RTX ray tracing technology that allows real-time rendering, virtual reality has gained some new buzz. With the introduction of 5G network, there are so many possibilities on how the VR and Augmented reality (AR) experience could become seamless and completely immersive. For instance, we can finally get rid of the USB 3.0 that is used to connect a VR headset to the PC, since we can do that wirelessly using 5G technology. Holographic images would be rendered on cloud-based platforms and the way we view entertainment would change forever.
-Transportation
Yes, what about transportation space? We have already seen how culturally disruptive platforms like Uber and Taxify have been, but imagine that there is still more. The most visible one on the horizon is that of driverless technology. Whether we like it or not, it is an innovative part of technology that is snowballing fast. With the use of 5G technology, many of the things that seem to be obstacles to the implementation of fully driverless technology will cease to exist. Imagine when your street light, the street itself, your garage, and even your gas station can all communicate with your driverless car. That would be insane, but with the arrival of 5G technology, it just might be our new reality.
